Around the World for Cougaret

When Joe Obermueller came to USF three years ago, he felt the need for an event at homecoming that portrayed USF and our love for the community of Sioux Falls and culture for service. Obermueller tells us how this once a year event got started.

“Well when I came to the University of Sioux Falls there was a need for some type of event to happen during homecoming that we didn’t have. So I wanted it to be something that would bring in all of our campus community: students, faculty, staff, board members, alumni and special guests. A night that would be inclusive to everybody who has something to do with our university,” Obermueller says.

Last year’s returning champs Purple Thunder are preparing for their spot in Cougaret. Freshman Lily Satterlee tells us why she decided to perform with the percussion group this homecoming.

“Well honestly it was just so many people telling me how much fun (the upperclassmen) had. (Be)cause I didn’t really understand what it was. They said, ‘Just do it! Just do it!’ And I’m really glad I did. Now of course I understand better and looking forward to doing it,” Satterlee says.

Cougaret is much more than a showcase night of the talent on campus, but it is also a night to get the community of Sioux Falls involved. Alecia Martinez tells us how the homecoming cabaret has transformed the city’s community.

“Sioux Falls has been impacted by Cougaret in the first year not many people knowing what it was or what it could do and having one grand prize. Now having every organization that comes gets some funding just for being here. I know there has been many stories of organizations who have been chosen and they just want to know who picked them and they want to thank them. They are so excited to be here and to have the opportunity to share their mission for their organizations. They are all so diverse with everybody that’s coming to Cougaret. There’s definitely an opportunity to connect with one of the organizations on a personal level,” Martinez says.

We live in a beautiful world, welcome to Cougaret III.
